Bridging Between Canada And Bangladsh

Writer: ABDULLAH MOHIBUDDIN Category: প্রবন্ধ (Essay) Edition: Dhaboman - Eid 2017

After my retirement from BIMAN - Bangladesh Airlines as DC10 Flight Engineer (Cockpit crew), I took off from Bangladesh and landed in Canada with my family. Since then six years has passed and we have become naturalized Canadians. We found Canada to be a wonderful country where we can live and thrive peacefully. It is notable that Canada is a vast country with only 35.2 million population (in contrast Bangladesh has less than 1/60th of land area but more than 4 times the population). There is a good chance that not all of us are fully aware of the relationship that currently exists between Canada and Bangladesh. Canada established diplomatic relation with Bangladesh in 1972. Both countries are represented by High Commission. Bilateral Relation, Multilateral Cooperation and people to people links between Canada and Bangladesh are expanding steadily. The Bangladesh- Canadian Community is estimated at over 100,000 and continues to make significant contributions to Canadian prosperity and to the multicultural fabric of Canada. Canada’s commercial relationship with Bangladesh has grown dramatically over the last 10 years. Canadian merchandise exports to Bangladesh were $525 million in 2012. Merchandise imports from Bangladesh were $1.1 billion in 2012. Canada’s main exports to Bangladesh include cereals, vegetables, iron and steel, oil seeds, fertilizers, machinery and electronic equipment. Agri-food is the leading export sector from Canada to Bangladesh. The Canada -Bangladesh relationship is particularly important for the Province of Saskatchewan. Saskatchewan’s exports (mainly wheat, fertilizers and pulses) to Bangladesh jumped from $49 million in 2003 to $410 million in 2016, making it one of the top-ten destinations for export. Canada’s main merchandise imports from Bangladesh include knit apparel, woven apparel, headgear, fish, seafood, and footwear. Canada is a bright spot for Bangladeshi apparel. We live in an increasingly globalized world. Information and telecommunications technology are the engines of the new Global Economy. Canada and Bangladesh have a bright future for cooperation in these areas. It would definitely be of much importance to know as much details as possible in this area if we are interested in getting involved in business and take advantage of our knowledge, understanding and resources in both the countries. Canada is very rich in natural resources. We do not realize that this gift of natural wealth has allowed us to exercise our innovative talents to develop tremendous expertise in transportation, energy and power, oil and gas, and consultancy services. Canadians have become builders of hydro-electric and thermal power plants and high voltage transmission lines. Recently, I had an opportunity to represent a renown Digital Marketing Company in Canada as a consultant. They hold large Global Business summit where the entrepreneurs, the investors and manufacturer come from all over the world to attend the Business Summit. The main target of this company is to provide lead generation services for organizations looking for sales growth, investors, trade partnerships and sponsors or meeting with business leaders across the globe. This BIZ to BIZ linkage between small and medium enterprises can have a strong impact in trade relation between Canada and Bangladesh. This can bring closer economic relation between the two countries, helping both to achieve the maximum benefit from it.
